Chocolate Cake near Madison GA

As we sometimes do, we had a project recently wherein we embarked on a Hero’s Journey for Chocolate Cake near Madison GA.

We weren’t necessarily after “the best” chocolate cake, but as an exercise in the Joseph Campbell activity of “attaining the boon” we sometimes do things just like this. We’re living in a golden age, you know, where you can find unimaginable plenty in a little southern town, despite what the lunatic fringe is saying about some kind of crisis.

The Mission

The mission actually started at Farmview. It was proposed that we have purpose-defeating chocolate cake for dessert after the glazed salmon and unsweetened tea.

So the quest for chocolate cake was launched. Farmview didn’t have any.

Ground Rules for the Quest for Chocolate Cake

Here they were: Less than 1 gallon of gas, avoid mass produced chocolate cake, and have it be good.  We can talk about moral equivocation if we want.  We would be able to knowledgeably answer the question “where can we get some chocolate cake” if it is posed by a guest. That’s the real reason.

Wal Mart Chocolate Cake

We all know that we probably could have gotten 10 chocolate cakes at Wal Mart, but ruled that out because we prefer the human scale chocolate cake.

In fact, come to find out, Wal Mart spends a lot of time and energy on their bakery, and over half of the Wal Marts in the US bake their baked goods onsite.

Still, no.

The Commercial Bakery Issue

So here’s the big question: What’s the likelihood that the chocolate cake from one of the local restaurants is actually made onsite versus some commercial bakery? Do we, or should we care about this?

At some point we decided to suspend our suspicion.

Actually if you do a search for “commercial bakery near Madison Ga” you get several responses, including Flowers Bakery which is a well known professionally run business who does this sort of thing for a living.

They’re actually not far from Pennington. So the real answer to the question, “where can you get chocolate cake in Madison, is probably answerable there. There are other commercial bakeries in Monroe and Covington.

We’ll have to go by and smell it at some point. Let’s go out on a limb and say that some places in the area get their “generic” chocolate cake there.

First Stop: Ingles

Is the Ingles chocolate cake made there, despite the fact that it literally backs up to this commercial bakery? They may respond to this if they want. Their website is vague in this regard. We were able to get an attractive slice of chocolate cake for about $3,  thus proving that we could attain the “Boon” and at a minimum you have to say we achieved our mission

Stop two: The Chop House

Are we going to send a chocoholic off to the Chop House? Not according to the menu. Pecan Pie is a possibility.

Stop three: The Sinclair

We like the Sinclair and it has completely invigorated that corner downtown, but they didn’t have any chocolate cake.  We tried to remember if they had Chocolate Cake at the Dolce Italian Place next door but we mis-remembered that we had cannoli in there the last time we were there. Cannoli yes, chocolate cake? Well, the online menu gives us some hope, but there is no photo.

Stop Four: Ricardo’s

We had cake in there previously, and in fact, they have two different types of Chocolate Cake on their menu. We had this one, and it was more than $4. Success #2. This is the “Gluten Free” Flourless Chocolate Cake. Spoiler alert: It has a lot of sugar.

Stop Five: Bistro 220

This one was a bit of a fail. This place is now closed for lunch.  If we want to send a guest out for chocolate cake, it needs to be in the evening evidently. Maybe the Covid and Supply Chain issues reached this place, and they haven’t invented robot servers yet.

The tone of the note below seemed a little unapologetic.

Stop 6: The DQ

We knew this would be a bit of a long shot, but the DQ has something called a “blizzard cake” which can be ordered in chocolate. In the highly likely event that we need a sugar fix, this would be an option despite not meeting our objective.

Stop 7: Cracker Barrel

The Cracker Barrel in Madison is a little hard to find, and we’re saying it is likely that the Cracker Barrel chocolate cake is mass produced. Still, for $4 you can get a piece of chocolate cake “plus” some ice cream, if you choose.

As usual, part of the experience at this place is looking at the stuff hanging from the ceiling. We didn’t order it, because we didn’t need to, but it is here if we want.

Chocolate Cake near Madison GA

So there you have it. Three and probably four options for chocolate cake in Madison, not even counting the Wally Mart.

So we’re ready to say that despite all of the doom and gloom, and talk of famine, the supply chain still is robust enough to give chocolate cake options in a little southern town. This isn’t even on a special occasion. It’s a gloomy Thursday.

We’re ready to say we’re living in a golden age, despite the negative news you’re hearing elsewhere.

Should we go on other quests? Of course. Next time Pecan Pie may be on the agenda, and that would end us up at the Chop House and possibly at Yesterday’s in Rutledge, where we have had it previously.
