Since we have some spare time, and always like some weirdness, this is a summary of the Paranormal Activity near Madison GA. Keep in mind that the definition of “paranormal” depends on the person, because that is the way it is. One person’s “weird” may be another person’s “just another day at work.”
Also, far be it from us to critique the belief system of anybody. If someone wants to believe in this stuff they may. It is our business to keep track of it though, for the benefit of guests from elsewhere that may need to explore.
There are numerous reports of paranormal activity near Madison GA, including hauntings, bigfoot sightings and UFO sightings. It is near the site of the Conyers Apparitions, which in the early 1990’s was considered a potential religious miracle. It is also near the site of Nodoroc, and the Wog, which is a legendary creature that haunted a mysterious swamp area.
Why are we telling you this?
Why are we telling you this? Well, it’s because there are a lot of day trips near Madison, and we do enjoy putting our guests onto some interesting experiences. We’re practically experts on travel in the southeast US. If you are a visitor from Europe and California, it’s fun to know that there are still places like this. We are experts in the field of Back Roads Travel and this is an example.
Ghosts
I am starting with this one because ghost stories are actually fairly common in the area. According to the local person that knows this stuff, Melissa Piche, there are several sites in the area that are reported to be haunted. According to the story below, a “confirmed” sighting of this would be the corner of fourth and Hill Streets.
Did it look paranormal like this? Well because of the fact that it was midnight or something, this is more likely to be the spirit of someone who had to wait too long to get across Main Street at 3 PM when the first shift gets off at Mannington.
There are several “haunted” houses near by. Panola Hall, in Eatonton, has a spooky history.
There is something that is called the “Lake Joy Trails of Terror” which is in Putnam county, that in 2021 had a “Valentine Haunting” which is a bit disturbing in and of itself. It is more likely that this is the sort of place that people put on costumes and act like it is haunted.
The Ghost of Camp Rutledge
Oh, this is a bit of a thing, and is about five miles away from our place.
Apparently in 1813 there was an especially violent uprising of the local native Americans and a lot of people were hacked to death near Hard Labor Creek.
The resulting spooky ghost apparently bangs on the cabins there, and slams doors if he (it is apparently a he) is in such a mood. This makes the happy campers a bit creeped out which leads to a more interesting camp experience for some of them. There is a link down below.
The Conyers Apparition
We told you about this place awhile back. In 1990, and for several years afterward, an apparition of the Virgin Mary was appearing in a field not far from Highway 81 in Conyers.

You can go back to read what we said about it at the time. This series of incidents is especially interesting because there were many thousand witnesses.
The Winder Wog
Not far from the airport in Winder, there is legend of an odd creature.
According to the link below, at the time of the original settling of Winder, there was an active geothermal site there. By that I mean sort of a spooky hot springs. The place is on the map as “Nodoroc”, and is the home of the Wog.
The Wog is sort of a half-wolf half-man and half-hog. The local historian of weirdness at the Barrow County Museum in Winder can be contacted for more information. This apparently fierce beast occasionally prowls this area looking for unsuspecting victims. Really.
“Nodoroc” apparently means “Gates of Hell” to which we would say who could have possibly thought that the Gates of Hell would be in Winder.
Unfortunately you can’t really wander around in the former marshland because someone owns it, and for whatever reason has chosen not to monetize their “good fortune.”
We will scout it ahead of time to see how close you can get to it and report back. We get up there from time to time.
Bigfoot Sightings
According to the Big Foot Field Research Organization (BFRO) there has been a few bigfoot sightings in the area. The closest one of these was down around the Home of Trisha Yearwood.
According to that reference, The sighting occurred in 1986 while a couple of kids were fishing by the above lake.
There was a sighting near Ft. Gordon, near Augusta, and one up near Columbia SC which is an hour or so beyond that, in the last decade or so.
Realistically the bigfoot sightings in Georgia are more common up in the hills. Who wants to be down in hot, humid Madision wearing a shaggy furry outfit? There is also such a thing as the “Skunk Ape” which is reported to inhabit the area in southeast Georgia in the swamp down there. Maybe they migrate.
There is a reference to BFRO Georgia reports down below.
UFO Reports
According to the National UFO Reporting Network, there were over 2500 reports of strange flashing lights in Georgia over the last few years.
Since the world’s busiest airport still requires blinking landing lights for the airships to land, it is probably natural that most of these are occurring in or near Atlanta or the local suburbs. Also, since southeast Georgia is within spitting distance of Cape Canaveral, it is also not totally shocking for reports to be coming from that area.
The closest of these was around Loganville which is about 25 miles away. A fellow was stuck in rush hour traffic and noticed flashing lights.
In Covington, in 2020, there was a formation of 14 flying lights that flew around for awhile and then vanished. Covington is also on the airport flight path if the wind is right. There was a “Dark Object” over the hospital in Milledgeville for an hour back in 2019 that it was felt needed to be reported.
MADAR Nodes
Did you know about this? There is such a thing as a “Multiple Anomaly Detection and Alarm” system, and for $250, which seems like an incredible bargain, we, too, may have a “node.” Evidently these things go off when something weird happens.
We will leave it up to you, the guests, to decide whether or not we need one of these worse than we need to re-do the windows in the guest house.
Paranormal Activity near Madison
So this is about it for the moment. If someone comes up with a really interesting story, please feel free to fill out the contact form and click us up. We’re always up for an interesting story, and we make it our business to know if there is anything fun or unusual happening. We will include it in an upcoming post.
Oh, by the way
As you know Madison is the home of the spooky “Jason Lives” cemetery, and there is one Friday the 13th in 2022 (May) and we still challenge anyone or everyone to meet us in a law abiding fashion just outside the gates of the cemetery that night as an observance. We wouldn’t possibly think of entering a spooky cemetery after dark on Friday the 13th.
We like locals that have a sense of fun, and we will provide the bedsheet for the outdoor cemetery showing of the spooky movie that night if anyone has interest in doing so.
